How much sleep DO kids need?

Two interesting, but almost contradictory studies appeared recently regarding sleep time needed for kids.

  The first, from  Brigham Young University reported in PsychCentral , argues that teens are actually better able to perform on tests with less than the usually recommended 9 hours of sleep.  The second, appearing in Pediatrics and reported today in USA Today   suggests that there is no scientific evidence for a "quota" of sleep for kids.  The best measure, the authors venture to say is "when the child wakes up refreshed in the morning"!
